Taking A Break

I am taking a break from blogging for now.  I am yearning for a place that combines Blogger and Facebook.  I am not interested in simply posting photos so Instagram is out and Twitter is not my thing.  Maybe something will come along and inspire me.  You can catch me on FB though if you want updates.

Gym Buddy

We toured gyms over the weekend in hopes of finding a place where I can burn off some calories.  I am two days into a new diet and I am actually feeling great.  I played racquetball for the first time and dig it.  I am horrible at it, but I enjoy the concept.  Andrew tested out the pool while Blake and I tested out their courts.  Reade and Piper happily played in the pretend kitchen in the Kids Club for almost the whole hour.  I think our family is mature enough to do the gym thing again without too much whining and crying.

1 Down

Guess who lost his first tooth last night?
Not in kindergarten and almost not in first grade.  I am really happy that thing fell out (er, pulled out by dad) before school was out so he can show his friends.
Look at that cute Burton tooth.  The other kids inherited Westersund sized teeth which the Tooth Fairy might find difficult to haul off with her dainty wings.

More Books

I had Blake's parent/teacher conference and they are calling for more books.
It was really fun picking through some classics and newly written books.
It will only be a short time before he gets to pick everything he reads so I am running with it.
I came across this quote and love it.

Saturday Blake-Con

Welcome to the first installment of Blake creating a weekly comic for his friends and family.

"It was pretty fun to come up with the idea.  I was thinking of monsters because I was reading a monster book I have.  Why don't I make a monster comic.  I started it and it came out pretty funny because I explained it to my mom in the car.  And then I had another idea and I was gonna write about it, but I forgot about it.  Now, I got the monster comic out."

Here are some pictures from last weekend's trip to Camp Orkila.

Piper got to ride a big horse for the first time.  She loosened up by the end of the ride!:

Some crazy parents and kids gathered for a Polar Bear Swim:

Saturday night was the campfire and I was so impressed with everyone's talent.  Here is one of Kapka's finest fiddling:

The dad in this family is a professional drummer in a local band and his daughter's angelic voice was amazing when they did this folk duo:

Andrew got to join in the fun for a tribute to the mothers by the Kapka dads:

Camp Orkila

On a ferry heading up to camp.  The kids woke up at 5:50am and were ready to roll.  Took me another 7 hours to get us out of the house.  We are with other families from Blake's school.  Happy weekend to you.

Salmon Release 2015

Blake's school nurtured salmon eggs into fishies and did their yearly Salmon Release in West Seattle.  The fish will grow for a year and then naturally head out to the Puget Sound.  The glasses Blake and Reade are wearing are polarized so they can see the fish underwater after they release them.

What do you do after releasing salmon?  Willing parents/kids head to the beach and eat a yummy salmon meal of course!

May Day'd

Piper's preschool had a May Day Walk.  They walked around the neighborhood and gave the neighbors flowers to say "thanks for being a great neighbor."  The kids melted my heart, as well as the neighbor's hearts.

Some kids were bashful and this is as
far as the flowers made it.

This neighbor said she was so
excited to receive May Day flowers
since she hadn't had any in
a very long time.

Art & Fish

These two weeks have been full of field trips and school events for the kids.  It started with Native Americans, became art, throw in some Salmon, and finish with a May Day parade tomorrow.  I might be a bit out of order, but it is time to start showing our creative side:

Piper's art walk at her preschool.  Her teacher set up their art around the play yard for the parents to peruse.  Absolutely adorable.

Bowl Making

I am now a bowl maker.  These are so much fun to make.

Soule Mama inspired me.

Fridge Wha?

I flew back from California only to have my husband wave goodbye as he hopped on a plane to work from California.  He was gone so I reached for that before bed, naughty snack.  I thought there was a box of chocolates and when I turned it over to read the label I screamed.

Bees?
In my fridge?

You never know what husbands are going to do while you are away.

NJWhitaker

This is cut and pasted from my Facebook page:

I just got home from a very important trip back to California. I got to show off my new tattoo to my bestest friend in the world. Nick is fighting back colon cancer and has his own cancer logo. A few of us are now branded with his image. His pink mohawk (many times other colors) is gone for now, but I am looking forward to a day when it grows back. One of his students designed the logo and I will wear it proudly forever on. My dream is to be in a nursing home someday where I can roll up next to Nick in my wheelchair and yell at him for how stupid I look at 89 with a tattoo of him on my neck.

Spring Break Learning

I am kind of a kids' book junkie right now.
These are fabulous and I can't wait to learn alongside my kids.

Piper sat on my lap and held the book open for me to read.

Reade had a practice day at a prospective elementary school and he and Blake got to make balloon lungs.  Reade is showing off where his would go.

Happy Easter 2015

We had a great Easter with a bunch of family and friends.  We went from having no family in town to having a guest list of: grandparents, nephew, nephew's girlfriend and her family, cousins who just moved near Portland, and Piper's friend from school and her dad.  I am waiting for David's set of pictures and will post them soon.

Saturday was an Easter egg hunt at the local community center.  We all rode bikes over and enjoyed the hunt.  We saw some familiar faces and it feels so nice to finally run into people you know at functions like these.

Magic Show

The older kids at Blake's school put on a magic show this last weekend.  They needed baked goods for the concession stand so I decided to pitch in and offer some themed cookies.  These were very fun to make and my hands had black food coloring stains for days!

My 7-Year-Old

Blake turned 7 and it was a weekend full of celebration.
Friday = school birthday celebration
Saturday = family birthday celebration followed by a school magic show
Sunday = Chuck E Cheese's birthday party.

I LOVE Chuck E Cheese's.  Seriously.  I had a blast.  I think Blake did too.

Haircut

Piper used a stool and got down the hair cutting bag from our hall closet.  She decided it was time for her first haircut.  I didn't know this was happening.  She cut bangs and "layers" on the front sides.  That will teach me to think she is napping!

Green and Ungreens

It was 8:45am when my husband texted me, "Happy St. Patrick's Day."  I had completely forgotten and dressed two of my three in plain clothes, not a hint of green in sight.  Thank goodness my oldest goes to a hippy school because he came home and said, "We don't pinch at Kapka, we give hugs."  So it was a surprise when the leprechaun found time to sneak attack the kids while "everyone" was out of the house for the day.  Can you believe that sneaky guy?  He made a horizontal green block in front of the kids' closets.  Piper got vertical streamers and each kid found a bag of golden chocolates.  That leprechaun is tricky and endearing.

Doing my Monday morning calendar routine.
A friend just lured me over to Instacart and I am hooked.  They have recipes and everything.

More school potlucks ahead.  I think this will be my contribution:
